Choosing the right Domain Name Registrar

CNS, Naples, FL DomainsThis time around, I’ve chosen a topic that should be near and dear to every modern business owner: choosing a domain name registrar.  Just in case you’re not familiar with the term, a registrar is a company with whom you register your company’s domain name, such as waltswidgets.com.  I can’t think of a single business I’ve worked with in recent years that did not have at least one domain name, whether it’s a multimillion dollar industry, like Physicians Regional Healthcare System in Naples FL, or the local barber shop.  The problem is that there are so many web-based companies competing for your registration dollar, all of which are seemingly identical on the surface.  It turns out that there are a few key things you should look for in a registrar, and I thought I’d take a moment to outline these:

1)      Price.  Obviously, competitive price is important.  One company to avoid is Network Solutions (www.networksolutions.com) as they gouge pretty badly on price.  A basic .com registration should not cost more than $15/year

2)      Configurability.  Domain names have a variety of what are called “DNS Records.”  These are configuration options used by IT administrators like myself to configure and maintain a domain.  There are many different kinds of DNS records, and not all registrars support all of them.  Look for support for the following kinds of records:

  1. TXT
  2. MX
  3. Cname
  4. SPF
  5. A

It’s not important to understand what each of those record types do, but if your registrar does not support one or more of them, it will limit what you are able to do with your domain name.

Sometimes, the records are supported, but you must call the support phone number in order to make any changes.  Other times, registrars charge a small fee every time you modify a record.  If your registrar is doing this, don’t put up with it.  There’s plenty of other registrars that do not play these kinds of games.

3) Support. Inevitably, there will be times where you do have to call for help.  In these cases, it’s very important that the company has US-based tech support, and that they answer the phone quickly.  No one wants to wait on hold while their website is down.

The Verdict:

Given all of these factors, my recommended registrar at this time is GoDaddy.  (www.godaddy.com)  They support all types of DNS records, have an easy-to-use web console, have excellent US-based support, and are veryDomain name support, Naples FLcompetitively priced.  If you are with a different registrar, I’m not necessarily saying you need to switch, but if you are tired of annoyances, or are being limited by what you can do, it might be something to consider in the future.

The worst registrar of the bunch is the notorious Network Solutions (www.networksolutions.com).  They are very expensive, and quite proprietary; making it difficult to perform simple look-up transactions and record changes.  Switching to a more reasonable provider may save you some time and headache down the road.

In other news:

I’d also like to take the opportunity to mention that I had the pleasure of meeting with the owners of an exciting new Naples business.  Last week, I spent some time with Robert Paulson and Don Stocker of Conceptual Woodworking and Design, LLC.  Both longtime Naples business owners in the custom carpentry design industry, Don and Robert recently joined forces to create Conceptual Woodworking, and specialize in custom kitchen remodels.  I was able to tour their facility on Taylor Rd., and was amazed at their craftsmanship and commitment to quality.

Using materials exclusively from the US and Canada, they design all of their cabinets and fixtures from scratch, never using prefabricated box cabinets or other shortcut methods.  They are true “artisans” in the very literal sense of the word, and it was very gratifying to see their commitment to quality.  This is especially true amid the current market mentality which sometimes puts sole emphasis on doing everything as cheaply and hurriedly as possible.  The difference in quality was immediately recognizable as I looked at some of their works in progress, and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who wants true custom cabinet work.

Please join me in welcoming them to the Naples FL business community, and in wishing them the best of luck with their new venture!  Robert and Don can be contacted by email at sales@conceptualwoodworking.com.
